Smuggler's Notch

After a long, long absence I was reminded by a friend of this poem. We found it during a trek through the Northwest Corner of New Hampshire. A story lies behind that trek and a story that fits into the world of Firefly that I have not recently contributed to. Perhaps this will poke the Muse into a short tale or two.

I personally am very curious about how my heroes have been fairing and how the rest of their story has been playing out.

In the meantime, enjoy!

Now why, by the smoke in Smuggler's Notch
My signal fire in the valley,
And your surely sentry standing watch.
Should I knock one whit from the tally?

Last night I drew a picket's fire,
And a Revenue bullet burned me;
Tonight I claim a renegade's hire
And the gold my smuggling has earned me.

You barter your life for glory and fame,
While I run my contraband cattle,
And I'll take my traitors wage of shame
Though the Devil wins the battle!

Remembering a friend

June 26th, 2008 (11:48 pm)

He went as he lived, quietly and with dignity. A soldier to the end who went with his boots on and dog-tags intact. The Mighty Quin served his life with distinction. There was never a rider he did not treat with calm acceptance. He taught lightness and balance without needing to use resistance or frustration.

A sergeant of the finest kind, Quin insisted on intelligence of his superiors before acceding to orders. He would attempt whatever was presented with humor and persistence. He never left a man behind once he had determined their worth. He carried all with fortitude as a good soldier must.

He was never a pet, never a beast of burden. He was a partner, a patient teacher, and an exemplary individual who needed no drama to make his presence felt.

Personally, I knew Quin when I first met him nearly 14 years ago. And he never let me forget that I was the one who had managed to mess up and come back human when everyone knows to come back as a horse is a far superior thing. He didn’t lord it over me, but there was no doubt that he had lived a better past than I. In all my time with him I was ever aware that I had an atoning to do. Sometimes I slipped, failed in being a better person. Quin never faltered.

He was my friend, he carried me when he should have left me, made me a better rider, a better trainer, a better person.

Letting him go in the end was difficult and at the same time it felt right. He was ready, he knew we were done this time. There would be another lifetime for us. I will see him again… Hopefully I will have made the right choices in this life to be able to join him the next time without apologies to share a new future that would continue from our past.

I will miss him dearly.
